Each of Japan's World Cup players will pocket a tournament bonus of 5 million yen if they get through the first round and 30 million yen if they win the quadrennial tournament, the Japan Football Association confirmed Thursday in Tokyo.
Japan has set a goal of advancing to the round of 16 in the coming 32-team contest. The 5 million yen is five times what the JFA had appropriated for the 1998 contest in France.
Each player will receive 8 million yen if the Japanese team advances to the quarterfinals, 10 million yen for the semifinals, 15 million yen for a third-place showing and 20 million yen for finishing runnerup.
In addition to the tournament bonus, 1 million yen will be awarded to each of the players for a win and 500,000 yen for a draw.
But if the Japan team finishes with only losses, the players will only be given 10,000 yen a day as their daily allowance.
The bonuses for the coaching staff, including Japan coach Philippe Troussier, were not disclosed.
A final list of the 23-member World Cup squad has to be filed with FIFA by May 21.
