Japanese midfielder Shinji Ono played a part in the opening goal but Feyenoord conceded a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw away to Ajax Amsterdam on Sunday in the Dutch first division.

Feyenoord took the lead against the league leaders through a 79th-minute goal from Santiago Leonardo, but Ajax maintained its five-point cushion at the top after Andre Bergdolmo leveled the scores from the penalty spot five minutes later.

Starting in a holding midfield position, Ono found little time to venture forward as the home side dominated the game. But the 22-year-old started the move that led to Leonardo's goal with a pass out of defense to Paul Bosvelt.

"It's a blow because we looked to have sneaked a result out there," said Ono.

Ajax heads the standings with 51 points from 25 games. Feyenoord is second on 46 with a game in hand, level on points with third-placed PSV Eindhoven.
