Takanobu Okabe captured his first normal hill victory in five years at the ski jumping national championships after stretching a jump out for 95 meters at Miyanomori Schanze in Sapporo.

Okabe, a former Olympic team member who won the large hill event Saturday on the K-120 Okurayama hill, won his second national title with a total of 244.5 points from jumps of 91.0 and 95.0 meters on the K-90 Miyanomori hill.

"I actually made some mistakes out there, but I'm proving that I've developed since I was able to fly that far. I'm always trying to improve. Once I stop trying to improve, it will be over for me," said Okabe, whose jump of 95 meters was the day's longest.

Meanwhile, Hiroya Saito placed second after pulling off jumps of 90.5 and 93.5 meters. Salt Lake City Olympic team captain Masahiko Harada, meanwhile, had a dismal performance slumping back to 47th place.

Also, Izumi Yamada won the inaugural women's ski jumping national championship event on the normal hill with a leaps of 82 and 86.5 meters.
