Medical personnel held drills Saturday at a stadium in Yokohama in preparation for providing emergency care during the World Cup soccer finals.

About 180 doctors and nurses as well as paramedics from the Yokohama City Fire Bureau participated in the drill at the International Stadium Yokohama, where they practiced providing on-the-spot care during an emergency. The stadium will be the venue for the final championship match on June 30.

In the scenario, about 80 spectators are injured when they attempt to flee the stadium after an explosion. They receive treatment and are evacuated to ambulances and a standby helicopter.

The drills were based on an emergency care manual drafted by a group that includes Yasuhiro Yamamoto, professor of Nippon Medical School. The practical training winds up a seminar for medical personnel that has been taking place in Tokyo since Thursday. The organizers said they will work hard to iron out problems they identified during the drills before the games kick off.

Jointly hosted by South Korea and Japan, the World Cup runs from May 31 to June 30.

The stadium will be one of the venues and will also host the final championship match on June 30.
