The World Boxing Council is considering a rematch of Tuesday's super-bantamweight title fight between champion Willie Jorrin of the United States and Japanese challenger Osamu Sato, which ended in a contentious draw.
Frank Quill, a WBC official who attended the fight at Tokyo's Ariake Colosseum, said Wednesday that he has recommended the rematch to WBC president Jose Sulaiman after one of the judges' scorecards stirred a controversy.
Italian judge Maximo Barrovechio had a 10-10 score for the final round while the others had it 10-9 in favor of Sato, even though the challenger kept the champion on the defensive in a last-gasp bid to make up for points he lost in the early rounds.
Noparat Sricharoen of Thailand judged the bout 114-112 in favor of Sato but Barrovechio and Vincent Rodriguez of the Philippines scored the fight 114-114 and 113-113, respectively.
Under the rules of the WBC scoring system, the match was recorded as a draw but it was Barrovechio's 12th-round scoring that swung the eventual result in favor of Jorrin.
