The Japan Football Association is unlikely to retain the services of national coach Philippe Troussier after his contract expires at the end of the 2002 World Cup finals, soccer sources said Monday.

Although a decision on the Frenchman has yet to be made, the JFA has come up with a plan to kick-start preparations for Japan's qualifying campaign for the 2006 finals under a new coach as soon as the May 31-June 30 tournament ends.

Troussier, 46, who earlier this month said he is "not among the list of candidates for Japan's post-World Cup coach," has reportedly been linked with the vacant Scotland manager's job.

Hiring a Japanese is apparently one of the options in the JFA's hunt for a new national team coach capable of leading Japan to a third successive World Cup appearance in 2006.
