NISHINOMIYA, Hyogo Pref. -- Quarterback Yosuke Ozaki scored two rushing touchdowns and the defense showed great resolve at the 1-yard line as the Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters defeated the Hosei University Tomahawks 24-6 Sunday in the 56th Koshien Bowl, collegiate national championship game.
It was Kansai League champion Kwansei Gakuin's first collegiate crown in two seasons and 22nd overall. Kwansei Gakuin avenged last year's 28-21 loss to Hosei, the Kanto League winner the last eight seasons, snapping Hosei's winning streak during the collegiate regular season and playoffs at 17. The last collegiate team to beat Hosei was also Kwansei Gakuin, which posted a 53-13 rout at the 1999 Koshien Bowl.
"We started this season with the loss to Hosei," Kwansei Gakuin's captain Rikiya Ishida said. "This revenge was one of the main goals that we set ourselves for the season."
