Free-agent right-hander Hideo Nomo broke off negotiations with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday concerning a three-year contract worth just under $20 million, a Boston daily reported Thursday.

According to the Boston Herald, Nomo's agent Don Nomura said they officially ended talks with the Red Sox before the negotiation deadline on Friday at midnight, after the American League club offered a deal Nomura described as "way off."

"They had so many chances to sign him. He (Nomo) wanted to come back but Boston didn't show they wanted him back, even if they said that they did. We've got to move on. We're not playing games," Nomura was quoted as saying.
