Former ozeki Miyabiyama had surgery on a potentially career-threatening shoulder injury during last month's Kyushu Tournament in Fukuoka, sumo sources said Wednesday.
The sekiwake went under the knife at a hospital in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, on Nov. 19 to allow surgeons to operate on floating cartilage in his right shoulder.
Miyabiyama, 24, who did not compete in last month's Kyushu meet, is hoping to recover in time for the New Year tournament in January.
