Japanese midfielder Shinji Ono, playing an unaccustomed role of defensive midfielder, helped Feyenoord keep its lead in the Dutch first division with a 3-2 win at mid-table RKC Waalwijk.

Japan teammate Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi, meanwhile, played his fifth full game for English first-division side Portsmouth, which defeated Nottingham Forest at home with the same scoreline in a wide match featuring two penalties.

In Waalwijk, Ono made a hesitant start just in front of the Feyenoord backline as the visitors adopted a defensive formation, with his wayward passes and miscommunication with teammates setting up some promising moves for the home side.

Ono regained his composure as the match wore on and, although he did not play a hand in any of the Feyenoord goals, found himself as a solid contributor to his side which sealed victory with a 75th-minute winner from Ebi Smolarek.
