British Open champion David Duval celebrated his 30th birthday with a 4-under-par 67 Friday to take a two-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the 200 million yen Dunlop Phoenix tournament.

Duval carded seven birdies against two bogeys around the Phoenix Country Club to double his overnight lead at 10-under 132 with fellow American David Gossett heading the chasing pack after shooting a 66.

Duval got off to a scorching start in Miyazaki Prefecture picking up four birdies over the first five holes.

"I thought I was going to shoot a score in the 50s. But I guess the bogey at the seventh where I would usually look to pick up shots hurt me a little," he said.
