Mongolian top-ranked maegashira Asashoryu took out newly crowned autumn champion Kotomitsuki and komusubi Wakanosato on Sunday to win the final-day competition at the single-elimination sumo tournament.

Asashoryu, in line for a hefty promotion at next month's Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament after going 10-5 in the autumn tourney, advanced to the playoff final by shoving out sekiwake Tochiazuma in the final of his preliminary bracket at Nagoya municipal gymnasium.

Asashoryu twisted down Wakanosato with an arm-lock throw and then barged out Kotomitsuki to win the three-way playoff and the winner's prize of 2 million yen.
