Olympic short track champion Takafumi Nishitani beat defending champion Satoru Terao to win his first title of the national invitational championships Sunday, while Chikage Tanaka coasted to her third straight crown.

Nishitani, winner of the two races held Saturday, maintained his comfortable lead over archrival Terao to collect a winning total of 115 points at Teisan Ice Skating Training Center in Nagano Prefecture.

Nishitani skated to victory in the 1,000 meters with a meet record of 1 minute, 30.907 seconds and placed third in the 3,000 to seal the victory.

Terao, who has won the annual competition six times, settled for a runnerup finish with 71 points.

Tanaka overcame elbow and lower back pains caused by a spill in the 1,000-meter quarterfinals and held firmly onto her lead by winning the 3,000 in 5:52.861 for her fourth title overall with 102 points.

Takako Takada followed in second place with 71.
