Defending champion Serena Williams and newly resurgent Jennifer Capriati have pulled out of the upcoming Toyota Princess Cup tournament in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United States, organizers said Saturday. Williams and Capriati told the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) that they are not mentally prepared to take part in the Sept. 17-23 tournament in Tokyo after the terrorist attacks.
Williams, runnerup to her sister Venus at the recently concluded U.S. Open, and Australian and French Open winner Capriati are among the top seeds in the $565,000 WTA tour event to be held at Ariake Tennis Forest Park in Tokyo.
French Open runnerup Kim Clijsters of Belgium, Monica Seles of the United States and Japan's Ai Sugiyama are competing as scheduled.
