World silver medalist Koji Murofushi beat Olympic and world champion Szymon Ziolkowski of Poland to win the men's hammer throw at the Goodwill Games on Friday.

Murofushi went 2 centimeters farther than his silver medal throw at last month's world championships in Edmonton, Canada, as the Asian record holder launched a fifth effort of 82.94 meters to hold off Ziolkowski for the gold.

"I continued to train hard after the world championships with an eye to performing well at the Goodwill Games," said Murofushi, who lived up to his world No. 1 ranking in a strong field that featured all Olympic and world championship medalists.

Murofushi went over 80 meters in four of six tries and took the lead with an 80.13-meter effort on his third attempt and sealed the victory in the fifth round of throws minutes after Ziolkowski came within 20 cm.

Ziolkowski took silver with 80.71 meters and Hungary's Balazs Kiss bronze with 79.51.
