Japan's top-ranked Ai Sugiyama and South African partner Ellis Ferreira shut down unseeded American Meghann Shaughnessy and Czech teammate Cyril Suk 6-4, 7-5 in the first round of the mixed-doubles competition at the U.S. Open on Friday.
"Because I didn't have a chance to play women's doubles, I will do my best every time I step on to the court," the 26-year-old Sugiyama said after the match.
