America's Heather Mulkey took the gold medal in women's freestyle roller skating at the sixth World Games on Thursday in a stunning performance.

Mulkey captivated the audience at the Akita Prefectural Skating Rink, performing a series of flawless leaps, spins and steps demonstrating power and grace.

Judges gave Mulkey a total of 386.5 points for her short and long programs followed by Italy's Erica Colaceci in second place with 370.4 points. Germany's Elke Dederichs placed third with 347.3 points.

"It feels great to win. I want to get ready for my next competition at the World Championships in Italy in November," the 16-year-old said.

"She skated really strong and she's been consistent throughout," said coach Mike Jacques.

In the men's freestyle, Italy's Luca Lailai won the gold followed by Joshua Rhodes of the United States in second and Daniel Arriola of Argentina in third.

Melissa Quinn and Adam White of the U.S. grabbed the gold in dance skating followed by Ester Ambrus and Gawaine Davis of Australia. Analia Martinez and Gaston Passini of Argentina placed third.

In the pairs skating, Italy's Patrick Venerucci and Beatrice Rossi placed first while Candice Heiden and William Crowder of the U.S. took the silver. Luciana Roiha and Max Santos of Brazil skated off with the bronze medal.

In the rhythmic gymnastics, Russian teenager Irina Tchachina outclassed the field to sweep all four gold medals on offer in the individual finals.

Tchachina, a member of Russia's gold medal-winning team at the 1999 world team championships, led a Russian 1-2 finish with Laysan Albertovna Utiasheva each in the rope, hoop, ball and clubs at Akita City Gymnasium. Elena Tkachenko of Belarus took bronze in all four disciplines.
