Nichinan Gakuen ace Hayato Terahara broke the high school record for speed on a single pitch at the national championship tourney Thursday and his Miyazaki teammates rallied for 6-4 win in 10 innings over Okayama's Tamano Konan.

Terahara, coming in as a relief pitcher at Koshien Stadium, unleashed a fastball clocked at 154 kph in the fifth inning to surpass the previous best of 151 kph turned in by former Yokohama sensation Daisuke Matsuzaka in 1998.

In Thursday's first game, Shogo Ito singled home the tying run and Yoshitomo Kusano doubled home Ito in the bottom of the ninth to give Meiho of Oita Prefecture a 4-3 "sayonara" win over Tochigi's Sano Nichidai.

In the final game of the second round, Toyodai Himeji scratched out a 4-3 win over Josuikan of Hiroshima.
