Japanese ace Ai Sugiyama and new partner Kim Clijsters of Belgium defeated Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic and Conchita Martinez of Spain to move into the quarterfinals of the women's doubles at Wimbledon on Wednesday.
Leading 5-3 in the final set with the match tied at 1-1, Sugiyama, who produced some inspired play at the net, hit a sweet volley at match point to seal the 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win at the All England Club and book a place in last eight.
The 26-year-old Kanagawa Prefecture native then went on to secure her second quarterfinal berth with South African partner Ellis Ferreira by beating Tom Vanhoudt of Belgium and Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik 6-3, 2-6, 9-7 in the third round of the mixed doubles.
