The Yomiuri Giants erupted for four runs in the first inning and Koji Uehara made it stand with a five-hitter as Yomiuri rolled to a 6-0 win over the Chunichi Dragons on Thursday at the Sapporo Dome, giving manager Shigeo Nagashima win No. 1,000 as the Giants skipper.
Nagashima, who guided the Giants to the Japan Series crown last season, became the 10th manager in Japanese baseball history and the second Yomiuri skipper, after the revered Tetsuharu Kawakami, to reach the 1,000-win plateau.
Nagashima needed 14-plus seasons to achieve the feat. Hanshin's Katsuya Nomura is the only active manager who has better record with a 1,279-1,224 mark.
