The Brazilian national team arrived in Japan on Tuesday ahead of the Confederations Cup, a rehearsal event for next year's World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea.

Brazil's below-strength squad, excluding such European-based stars as Rivaldo, Cafu and Roberto Carlos, arrived in Nagoya instead of Narita airport for a simulation of domestic travel during the World Cup.

"Some familiar names are missing from the squad, but this is a chance for newcomers to prove themselves and stay on the national side," Brazil coach Emerson Leao told reporters.

Leao, former manager of J. League sides Shimizu S-Pulse and Verdy Kawasaki, and his squad will kick off their Confederations Cup campaign May 31 against Cameroon at Kashima Stadium in Ibaraki.

Brazil will then play Canada on June 2 and Japan on June 4, also at Kashima Stadium, in first-round clashes.

A friendly against Tokyo Verdy 1969 is set for Saturday at Tokyo Stadium as Brazil's final tuneup for the May 30-June 10 Confederations Cup.
