At Jubilo Iwata Stadium, Naohiro Takahara knocked in an equalizer in second-half injury time to put Jubilo back in the game. The Japan forward beat his marker Yoshihiro Natsuka and goalkeeper Yohei Sato in the box with a header after latching on to a long ball from defender Toshihiro Hattori.

In the 102nd minute, defender Go Oiwa headed in a pin-point free-kick from Hattori for the winner.

Jubilo, however, had struggled with Sapporo's tight and well-organized defense for most of the game. Jubilo was reduced to 10 men in the 58th minute when defender Makoto Tanaka was sent off for his second yellow card of the day and six minutes later conceded a goal to the visitors through Tomohiro Wanami.

Sapporo manager Takeshi Okada said, "We were playing according to our game plan until the 89th minute of the game. But we couldn't improve our league position as we failed to score the second goal and lost our concentration at the end. But this is soccer." Jubilo increased its points tally to 26 and widened its lead over second-placed Shimizu S-Pulse to eight. Shimizu and Nagoya Grampus Eight didn't play on the day due to Shimizu's participation in the Asian Cup Winners' Cup in Saudi Arabia.
