An inexperienced Japan sevens team failed to qualify for the quarterfinal stage of the Japan Sevens rugby tournament held at Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium in Tokyo on Sunday.
Japan, which had controversially rested its national team players after a weeklong training camp in preparation for its forthcoming fixture against South Korea, looked out of its depth in going down 34-0 to Australia and 24-7 to England. It did, however, manage to restore some pride in front of the 6,000 spectators that braved the cold and wet conditions by thrashing Malaysia 47-7 in its final group game.
Japan will meet Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals of the Bowl competition Monday.
