A late equalizer denied Bangladesh its first ever win against Japan in the opening match of the Prime Minister's Gold Cup field hockey tournament on Saturday.

Bangladesh took the lead at Bhasani Stadium in the 55th minute from a penalty corner, only for Japanese captain Takahiko Yamahori to level the score with a fine effort in the final minutes and earn his country a 1-1 draw.

"It is a good result for us, but I'm not happy with the way the boys performed," York Schumacher, Bangladesh's German coach, said.
