World sprint silver medalist Eriko Sammiya took second to world champion Monique Garbrecht-Enfeldt of Germany again Sunday, taking runnerup honors in the women's 1,000 meters on the final day of the World Cup speedskating meet here.

Sammiya posted a time of 1 minute, 16.60 seconds in her specialty event for her first World Cup medal since the Nagano meet in December, while Garbrecht-Enfeldt notched her third World Cup win of the season with a 1:16.38 at Heerenveen indoor arena.

"It was a tough race, but my finish was strong. So, I'm happy that I persevered through the difficult parts," said Sammiya, who won her first World Championship medal two weeks ago in Inzell, Germany.

Canada's Catriona LeMay-Doan, who won the women's 500 on Saturday, was third in 1:16.73.

Meanwhile, Aki Tonoike was fifth in 1:16.96 and Sayuri Osuga was a distant 19th in 1:19.33.

In the men's event, Hiroyasu Shimizu, who set a rink record winning the 500 on Saturday, could only manage 14th in the 1,000 with a time of 1:11.33. Erben Wennemars of the Netherlands won in 1:10.06.
