There's the good Martina Hingis and then there's the bad Martina Hingis. For a while it wasn't clear which one would decide Saturday's semifinal against Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
The top-ranked Hingis played great at the start, but then tanked the second set. In the third set, the good Martina Hingis returned to claim a roller-coaster victory at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
The Swiss star beat Maleeva 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 to reach her fifth straight Toray final. She will play No. 2 seed Lindsay Davenport of the U.S. in today's final. Davenport upended third-seeded Anna Kournikova of Russia 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0 in the day's other semifinal.
