Two-time defending champion Martina Hingis returned to her winning ways and Russian glamour girl Anna Kournikova also reached the quarterfinals on the second day of action at the $1.18 million Toray Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Hingis, runnerup at the Australian Open on Sunday, wasted no time in downing Cara Black of Zimbabwe 6-3, 6-3. Kournikova, however, struggled against local qualifier Saori Obata before winning a 7-6 (10-8), 1-6, 6-4 marathon. Wearing an outfit with sleeves of different lengths, the world No. 1 had little trouble keeping control of the match despite Black's impressive comebacks at certain moments of the match.
"After playing here so many times you know what the strategy is and I think I played very well today," Hingis said.
