OSAKA -- Former women's marathon world champion Junko Asari announced her retirement Wednesday, saying she no longer feels she can compete on the world stage.
Asari, 31, who became the first female Japanese world champion in athletics when she won the women's marathon in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1993, said she would like to move into coaching in the future while enjoying running as "an ordinary citizen."
