Japan's Ai Sugiyama and new partner Nicole Arendt of the United States defeated France's Alexandra Fusai and Rita Grande of Italy in straight sets Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the Australian Open women's doubles.
Sugiyama and Arendt, the No. 2 seeds, overwhelmed their ninth-seeded opponents with some aggressive play to win the quarterfinal 7-5, 6-3.
