Sydney Olympic gold medalist Ryoko Tamura is suffering from appendicitis and has skipped the ongoing national training camp in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japanese judo officials said Monday.

Kazuo Yoshimura, head coach for the Japanese women's national team, said Tamura complained about abdominal pains Saturday night and was diagnosed Sunday with appendicitis.

He said an operation may be necessary depending on the outcome of Tuesday's re-examination.

Tamura, 25, won the women's 48-kg gold medal in Sydney in September after settling for silver at the previous two Olympics.
