Leadoff runner Shoji Miyai grabbed the early lead Wednesday and anchor Nobuhito Miyazaki turned away a late challenge by Komazawa University to give Juntendo its 10th overall championship in the Tokyo-Hakone collegiate ekiden road relay.
The five Juntendo runners completed the 109.2-km relay from Lake Ashinoko in Kanagawa Prefecture to Tokyo's Otemachi business district in 5 hours, 30 minutes, 57 seconds to win the two-day event with a total time of 11:14:05.
Defending champion Komazawa came in second at 11:17:00 while Chuo University, which won the outward leg of the competition Tuesday, finished third at 11:19:17.
The victory made Juntendo only the second school to secure the triple crown of collegiate road relays after winning the collegiate invitational in October and the national championship the following month. Daito Bunka won the first ekiden triple crown over the 1990-91 season.
Beginning the return to Tokyo eight seconds back, Miyai quickly overtook Chuo's Nobuaki Nagai and went on to give Juntendo a 36-second lead over the 20.7-km sixth leg with a time of 58:21.
Juntendo's Miyazaki surged ahead over the final 20 km.
