The Japan Series champion Yomiuri Giants coughed up an extra 70 million yen Tuesday in order to re-sign infielder Toshihisa Nishi for next season, officials of the Central League club said.
Nishi, 29, who contributed to Yomiuri's first championship since 1994 and 19th overall this past season with 20 home runs and a CL second-best 167 hits, said he has mixed feelings about his new deal, worth an estimated 160 million yen.
"I'm not dissatisfied, but I'm not going to throw my hands in the air and dance for joy either. I just want to get back into training and focus on next season," he said.
Meanwhile, Yomiuri pitcher Masumi Kuwata agreed to a 40 million yen pay cut and also re-signed for a reported 160 million yen for next season.
