Hiroyasu Shimizu rewrote the record on his favorite track Sunday to complete a double-gold strike by winning the 500 meters for the second straight day at a speedskating World Cup meet in Nagano.

Shimizu carved up the M-Wave indoor ice arena's rink in 35.10 seconds to better the 35.19 standard he set at the same venue in March.

Compatriot Toyoki Takeda clocked 35.35 for second place and Canadian world champion Jeremy Wotherspoon was third in 35.50.

"I'm disappointed that I couldn't cross the line in 34 seconds," said Shimizu, referring to the target he had set for himself after picking up the first of his gold medals Saturday.

In the 1,000 meters, Norway's Adne Sondral added a second gold medal to the one he won at the same distance 24 hours earlier with a time of 1:10.64 in Sunday's final race.

Shimizu came in second in 1:10.83.

Wotherspoon, who has just recovered from the stomach flu, posted 1:10.92 to give the 500- and 1,000-meter world record holder the bronze.

In women's races, Japan's Aki Tonoike upstaged world champion Monique Garbrecht-Endfeldt of Germany and stole the local limelight from compatriot Eriko Sanmiya by notching her first World Cup win in the 1,000 meters.

Tonoike, a bronze medalist in the 500 and 1,000 on Saturday, powered home in 1:17.07 while Garbrecht-Endfeldt clocked 1:17.24 for a second straight silver.

Sanmiya, however, could not match Saturday's winning performance and had to settle for third.

In the women's 500, Canadian world champion Catriona LeMay-Doan secured back-to-back golds with a time of 38.68 to remain unbeaten this season.

Sanmiya claimed the silver in 38.77.
