The Seibu Lions will release infielder Tony Fernandez after having the services of the veteran major leaguer for only one season, Seibu officials said Monday.
Seibu has sent an official to Florida to convey the Pacific League club's decision to the 38-year-old Fernandez, who hit .327 with 11 homers and 74 RBIs in the 2000 season.
"Tony had an impact on our club with his professionalism and mental approach to the games. That more than made up for what my team lacked and we would like to express our gratitude to him," Seibu president Kenji Ono said.
Seibu officials said the release of Fernandez is aimed at giving greater opportunities to its young players.
