YONO, Saitama Pref. -- Yoshimoto Usugi rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns as the Hosei University Tomahawks cruised past the Nippon Sports Science University Golden Bears 65-23 Sunday in the Clash Bowl -- the Kanto Collegiate League final.
Hosei, which clinched its seventh straight Kanto title and ninth overall, is to play the Kansai champion, Kwansei Gakuin University, for the national crown at Koshien Stadium on Dec. 17.
Playing before a crowd of 12,400 at Saitama Super Arena, the Tomahawks displayed their strong running game.
They had 54-, 65- and 42-yard scoring runs and gained 511 yards, 79 yards more than NSSU's total offense for the day, on the ground.
Quarterback Takuro Ikawa passed for 121 yards and two touchdowns for Hosei.
The Golden Bears played their ball-control offense well, maintaining possession for more than 32 minutes, but their defense was too vulnerable against Hosei's big rushing plays.
"We've been working on the offense to make the best of our strength -- our running attack -- since last spring," Hosei head coach Hiroyuki Omori said. "It's all about winning the collegiate national title."
In the past seven seasons, Hosei has an 0-5-1 record in the collegiate championship Koshien Bowl.
Shusaku Shiraki, who rushed 128 yards and scored a rushing and a receiving touchdown, was named the game's MVP.
The American Football Writers of Tokyo selected Ikawa as the Kanto League's MVP of the season.
