Ozeki Musoyama muscled out Takanowaka and threw down Akinoshima to win both ends of a playoff Sunday and claim the single-day sumo championship at Nagoya's Rainbow Hall. Musoyama, who regained the ozeki rank after posting a 10-5 record at the autumn tourney last month, muscled out Musashigawa stable teammate yokozuna Musashimaru to win his preliminary group competition.

The burly ozeki, who has been struggling with a lower back injury, then forced out maegashira Takanowaka in the first match of the championship round-robin.

He then threw komusubi Akinoshima over with a belt throw for his second title in the tourney.

In the preliminary block finals, Akinoshima muscled out Kotonowaka and Takanowaka backed out ozeki Dejima.
