Monica Seles and Serena Williams, the first and second seeds, respectively, who both had byes in the first round, cruised through their first tests at the Toyota Princess Cup on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals.
Seles fought off qualifier Miroslava Vavrinec of Switzerland 6-4, 6-4, while Williams downed Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1, 6-4.
Also advancing Wednesday in Tokyo were fourth seed Julie Halard-Decugis, a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Nicole Pratt, and American Amy Frazier, a two-time runnerup here (1990, '94) who beat Angeles Montolio of Spain 6-0, 6-1. In an all-Japanese clash, Shinobu Asagoe downed Yuka Yoshida 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
