Japan's seventh-seeded Chire Koyama battled from behind to defeat Chen Tong Fei Ming of Taiwan in the second round of the Olympic women's table tennis singles Thursday and advance to the quarterfinals for a second straight Games.

Koyama, the 1989 world champion for China, allowed Chen Tong to take the lead in the first two sets 26-24, 22-20, but then rallied 21-6, 21-9, 21-15 for the win at the Sydney Olympic Park State Sports Center.

Koyama will face China's top-seed Wang Nan in the quarterfinals Friday.

Japan's 19-year-old An Konishi also went five games against Ryu Ji Hye of South Korea, but came up short 21-17, 22-20, 15-21, 17-21, 22-20.

In the men's singles first round, Koji Matsushita swept past Cheung Yuk of Hong Kong 22-20, 21-19, 21-17.
