All-Star shortstop Kazuo Matsui belted a grand slam homer in the fifth inning and Tony Fernandez added a three-run blast in the eighth Saturday to power the Seibu Lions 9-5 over the Daiei Hawks in Sapporo.
Matsui's slam to the center field stands off Daiei starter Brady Raggio capped a five-run eruption in the fifth inning as Seibu erased a four-run deficit to take a 6-5 lead over the Hawks.
Daisuke Matsuzaka (6-5) picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief after Seibu starter Takashi Ishii spotted Daiei a 5-1 lead on three homers surrendered over the first four innings.
