Martina Hingis caught no one by surprise on Sunday. She was supposed to win the Toray Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament and that's exactly what she did. Victory, however, didn't come easily.
Sandrine Testud put up a spirited fight against the world's top-ranked player from Switzerland. But in the end, the Frenchwoman couldn't avoid the inevitable. Hingis defended her Toray crown with a 6-3, 7-5 win at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
"This title means a lot to me," said the top-seeded Hingis, who needed 1 hour, 14 minutes to get the job done before 8,745 fans. "It's the first one of the new millennium."
