As the Russian Army focuses its firepower on the eastern Donbas region and Ukrainian forces go on the counter-offensive, the war in Ukraine continues to ebb and flow.
Russia’s overwhelming advantage in terms of its arsenal means that Ukrainian forces are in for a long and difficult fight. In short, they are embarking on a bitter war of attrition, much like the gruesome trench warfare of World War I.
All this notwithstanding, the leadership of the war effort by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been unwavering, and the morale of his country's military remains high. Nor have the Ukrainian people lost the fighting spirit to defend their homeland. Vladimir Putin reportedly believed that a special Russian military operation of “shock and awe” would quickly bring about Ukraine’s collapse, estimating it would take three days to bring down Kyiv.
