I deeply regret that the article "Thai military delivers oppression, not happiness" in the Sept. 23 edition of The Japan Times does not do justice to the heavy responsibilities that have been placed on the shoulders of Thai Prime Minister Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha and his government during such a critical transitional period in Thai democracy.
No mention whatsoever is made about the serious political crisis facing Thailand that brought the current administration to power.
The choices confronting Thailand were clear cut. Thailand was on the brink of more political conflict, paralysis and, worse still, more politically motivated violence.
These are indeed exceptional times that require strong leadership and a firm and steady to turn back the tides of polarization, confrontation and divisiveness.
Indeed, there will be challenges along the way, but the Thai government is determined to move forward the road map to democracy that we have in place and we are resolved to steer the country back to the path of a vibrant, strong and sustainable democracy that meets the aspiration of the Thai people.
