How safe is Tokyo? A recent report from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said that Tokyo residents handed in ¥3.34 billion in lost cash last year. Of that, nearly 74 percent of the total, or ¥2.47 billion, was returned to its rightful owners.
Tokyo is a large city where carrying cash is still commonplace, but even so, these recent figures are pretty clear evidence that Tokyo is a relatively safe city with generally honest people.
The report also noted that although Japanese law states lost property can be claimed by the person who turned it in after three months, most apparently do not do so. A total of ¥390 million in cash went into the city's hands after the finders relinquished their right to the cash. Furthermore, all through Tokyo, 3.5 million lost items of all kinds were turned in last year, another all-time record.
