Regarding the July 8 article "Aso takes aim at wealthy states' 'land grabs' in developing world": A standing ovation to Prime Minister Taro Aso for addressing "responsible foreign investment" in agriculture to deal with the "food crisis" that may be looming ahead of us.
Furthermore, Aso's consideration for the people of poor countries that will lose out in land grabs is admirable. I am proud that he has taken the initiative to urge concerned parties to "frame a coordinated global response" to such land deals.
Maybe our technological priorities should change. Though I am not trained in the field, I strongly feel that some of the best and the brightest people in this world should concentrate more on agricultural technology rather than on financial engineering — technology such as preservation of food after harvesting and processing, organic farming, etc. After all, money does not have any nutrients in it. Just food for thought.
