Regarding the Feb. 3 article "Protesters, whalers fight over use of illegal weapons": The only way this will ever stop is if Japan itself stops killing whales. We citizens of the world will not stand idly by to watch our beloved whales and dolphins slaughtered for Japanese appetites.
I know, our factory farming is just as bad, but we breed those animals for food. The whales take many years before they can produce even one calf. Japan, left to its own devices, would slaughter them into extinction. Most of Japan does not eat whale meat. I understand that the government tries to pass it off on schoolchildren, but that they don't like it.
Whales are highly communicative and intelligent. They deeply love their children and each other. They have shown that they want to communicate with us and have many times saved human life from sharks and drowning. I beg the Japanese people to stop this very small group of murderers and to return the country to its honor.
We need a country to lead us in the defense of the oceans and the life that lives there. And I can think of no country better than Japan for that.
