This year, in preparation for the Honolulu Marathon, I have made 55 circuits around the Imperial Palace. On several occasions, cyclists have silently passed by me very close and very fast. A couple of times they have actually brushed against my arm. I am sure that it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.

When I was a member of the Boy Scouts, we were told that, when walking along a country road, we should always walk toward oncoming traffic for safety. Remembering that advice, and taking the view that prevention is easier than the cure, I propose that runners and walkers keep to the left in an anti-clockwise rotation, and that cyclists keep to the left in a clockwise rotation around the Imperial Palace.
