Regarding Brahma Chellaney's Oct. 23 article, "Remember the China lesson": Some questions remain unanswered in the author's comparison of the economic progress made by China and that made by India.

How much has the authoritarian rule practiced in China contributed to the all-around progress it has been able to make? In other words, does the reason or one of the reasons for India's modest progress by comparison have to do with the type of government India has -- namely, one of the purest forms of democracy being practiced anywhere in the world?

And, in the context of the present-day economic situation, can an unbridled practice of capitalism be considered desirable for the overall benefit of the world population?
