The Washington Post article by Andrew Klavan, "Myths about Tinseltown liberals," which ran in The Japan Times on Oct. 19, presents critical observations of leftwing filmmakers. In my "leftwing" view, Sen. Joe McCarthy did not serve the interests of the United States with his blunderbuss approach to ferreting out "pinkos" and "commies." To the contrary, he tarnished the reputation of the land of the free.

Moviemakers have as much a right to depict their understanding of reality as those who savage them. After all, the freedom to disagree is as American as Coca-Cola and McDonald's. Don't put down Hollywood for calling, as journalist Edward R. Murrow did, a spade a spade. But then there's disagreement on what constitutes a spade.
