In response to Barbara Smith's Sept. 18 letter, "New face of American feminism" -- about U.S. Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin -- I would like to say that regardless of what "caused the Big Bang," teaching schoolchildren about "God" would be disastrous, because, from the tone of Smith's letter, it would be Smith's and Palin's God, not mine.

As for "global warming," what exactly is the "wider discussion" that Smith seeks. If Smith lives in Tokyo, then this past summer should have been a clear indication that, "science" or otherwise, it's getting unbearably hot.

Regarding guns: I don't live in the "middle of nowhere" and, like everyone else I have ever met in my life, I don't have "a pack of aggressive coyotes" in my backyard. And if that's Smith's "reasoning" as to why everyone should have guns, then it isn't just the coyotes that should be scared.

Regarding abortion: Yes, a sexual abstinence program is a great idea. But just out of idle curiosity, does anybody know anyone in the world who can follow one? Neither Palin nor her 17-year-old daughter was able to.

Finally, why is Smith saying "long live the queen?" Even if Palin becomes president, she would never be a "queen" -- unless, of course, we all lived in a fantasy world.
