The Oct. 1 editorial "Mr. Aso throws down the gauntlet" makes Taro Aso -- following his first policy speech before the Diet -- look like no more than the president of the Liberal Democratic Party preparing for an upcoming election battle, rather than the new prime minister of Japan outlining his vision and plan for getting the country back on its feet.

Napoleon's motto was "Attack is the best defense." Perhaps that's the strategy Aso has adopted. Unfortunately, he and his LDP really look more like a desperate wild animal backed into a corner with no other recourse other than to attack.

If Aso calls a general election, the LDP will need to do more than bark at the DPJ if it hopes to win. It will need to present a concrete plan to people. No one in their right mind would blindly vote for a party then later ask "OK. Now what's the plan?"
